When we first moved into our apartment, I was most excited about my spanking new kitchen with granite countertops, rich espresso colored cabinets and the abundant storage space. The first project I took on within about a day of moving in was organizing the junk drawer. A junk drawer is nothing but a catch all drawer that has all the little things that don’t have a place in the rest of the kitchen. Being an organizing and home decor nut, I had enough inspiration from my favorite blogs such as iHeart Organizing and magazines such as Martha Stewart Living and Real Simple but I didn’t want to go overboard spending additional money on special drawer dividers.
I already had 1-2 drawer dividers that I had used in my previous apartment from Container Store’s Linus™ line but I wanted to see if I could do without buying anymore dividers. Since I had leftover plastic containers from Ikea and other stores that I no longer wanted to use for food storage, I thought I’d try using them as drawer dividers for the odds and ends that I needed for cooking such as measuring spoons, cups, peelers, clips, pressure cooker weights, etc. The end result was great – The containers fit in perfectly and are just the right size for everything I wanted to fit into this drawer. I even have room for my cookbooks, kitchen appliance manuals and medicines.
Since I used things I already owned, this project came in at $0 – That’s always fun to say!
